Eight character types recognized by Confucian teachings as possessing noble qualities:
- Compassion — uses virtue to guide others, ritual propriety to establish stability
- Righteousness — chooses honor over survival
- Humility — modest despite high status and talent
- Wisdom — responds calmly to unexpected situations
- Integrity — consistent in rewards and punishments
- Capability — the skilled subordinate with strength and martial ability
- Agility — navigates dangerous terrain swiftly
- Presence — formidable momentum that intimidates in both small and large battles
Beyond these eight lies the Supreme General — appearing inadequate yet demonstrating resolve, flowing like water yet guided by firm purpose, appearing simple while employing complex strategies.
