Eight character types recognized by Confucian teachings as possessing noble qualities:

  1. Compassion — uses virtue to guide others, ritual propriety to establish stability
  2. Righteousness — chooses honor over survival
  3. Humility — modest despite high status and talent
  4. Wisdom — responds calmly to unexpected situations
  5. Integrity — consistent in rewards and punishments
  6. Capability — the skilled subordinate with strength and martial ability
  7. Agility — navigates dangerous terrain swiftly
  8. Presence — formidable momentum that intimidates in both small and large battles

Beyond these eight lies the Supreme General — appearing inadequate yet demonstrating resolve, flowing like water yet guided by firm purpose, appearing simple while employing complex strategies.
