Ho’oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian healing practice built on four phrases: I’m sorry. Please forgive me. I love you. Thank you.

The practice aims to heal damaged relationships and address emotional, physical, and spiritual wounds. Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len reportedly used it with psychiatric patients in Hawaii, resulting in reduced symptoms and decreased medication.

The mechanism is rooted in what Buddhism calls sankara — karmic impressions from past experiences that resurface as emotional triggers in the present. Ho’oponopono works by consciously addressing these impressions at their source.

Practice: find 10 minutes daily. Bring to mind someone who caused you suffering. Direct the four phrases toward them — and toward yourself. Self-compassion is as essential as forgiving others.

Inner peace creates the foundation for genuine change.
