Based on Nguyễn Nhật Ánh’s beloved novel, The Girl from Yesterday brought back a wave of nostalgia — for a particular kind of Vietnamese storytelling that is gentle, honest, and quietly profound.
I first encountered Nguyễn Nhật Ánh through a used copy of Thằng Quỷ Nhỏ, found in a second-hand book collection. From there I collected his complete series — and later shared them during my years at university in Ho Chi Minh City. Some of those books, I’m told, are still “borrowed.”
This film is a reminder that the best stories don’t need explosions or spectacle. They just need truth.
